Never Take Anything for Granted

Going through the situation that we all are facing has reminded me of the unique qualities that we as Americans have in terms of our desire to work, progress, and wake up every morning with a sense of purpose. Years ago I read a book called “The Protestant Ethic and the Spirit of Capitalism” by Max Weber.

Although he was not necessarily a proponent of capitalism, he acknowledges and chronicles the importance of Protestant ideals, such as hard work and discipline, as the basis for the formation of our capitalist society.  According to him, it is the spirit of hard work and progress that formed the underpinnings of Western culture.

Whether you agree with Weber or not, I think it has been made clear through our current situation that people have a desire to work, provide for their families and be productive members of society.  Our human desire to be useful, help others and care for the ones we love are qualities innate in all of us.

I, for one, am grateful to live in a country where I am able to do this. As a business owner, I am grateful to provide jobs. As an entrepreneur, I am grateful to be able to create businesses that provide jobs.

This has been a stark reminder not to take anything for granted. 🙏
